In traditional vanitas paintings, Skulls have the connotation of death, but they can mean life as well. These larger than life skull paintings have a more contemporary approach. Which is conveyed with unnaturalistic color to show how lively the memories of these creatures can be, and by using composition the skull has been cropped and enlarged to show interest in form and negative space. A skull can mean life because the memories of these animals were once contained and protected by that skull. Since animals can’t speak these paintings are speaking for them. They have made a much larger impact on the world than what it seems since every skull has a story to tell.
